This is a wonderful documentary by writer/directors David Leaf and John Scheinfeld. Shows up the hypocrisy of so-called democracies (in this case the US) that spout endlessly about freedom of speech and then immediately try to battle those who try to exercise that right.
I was left with a number of lasting impressions about this film:
- that Lennon was genuinely frightened of something happening to him (and backed off from his public appearances and support for groups like the Black Panthers as a result)
- astonishment that a man could spend over two years in prison for selling two marijuana joints
- that Nixon was easily the single most evil man ever to be elected to high office
- that the US voters were so out of touch with reality that they voted Nixon back into office in 1972
- that more than anyone else I can think of, Lennon touched a generation and the emotion over his death would not be seen until Princess Diana's death many year later.
While I don't agree with many of his methods or his style, the one thing Michael Moore achieved with the success of Columbine and Fahrenheit 911 was to raise the profile of the documentary. There have been some very good ones in the last few years and this is a beauty.
