I always feel like I need to apologise for liking this film so much. I know its completely predictable, I know some of the acting is dreadful, but I don't care.
I love silly movies that know they're silly eg Independence Day. I despise silly movies that try to pretend that they're not silly eg The Day After Tomorrow.
Down Periscope stars Kelsey Grammar (Dr Frasier Crane) as a submarine officer (Tom Dodge) who is overdue for his own command. He is given one last chance. The Navy in the person of Admiral Winslow (Rip Torn) wants to know if the defence systems could prevent a rogue diesel sub from an enemy country from launching an attack on the US. But Dodge's immediate superior, Admiral Graham (Bruce Dern) doesn't like Dodge and decides to take a hand by personally selecting a crew of the biggest losers and deadbeats in the Navy.
Grammar's enthusiasm carries much of the film. His broad grin and announcement "I love this job!" is infectious. I didn't recognise most of the cast with the exception of the usually obnoxious Rob Schneider as an over officious executive officer, Ken Hudson Campbell as the cook (he's Max from the Bruce Willis classic silly movie Armageddon), Harry Dean Stanton as the engineer and the always wonderful William H Macy as Dodge's war game opponent commander.
Lauren Holley plays the only female crew member, but the film is really stolen by standup comic Harland Williams as Sonar and Toby Huss as the radio operator (who does a great Sinatra impersonation).
I know it didn't get good reviews, but I love this one.
