Shoot to Kill (1988)

I always knew this film as Deadly Pursuit, but whatever it's name, this is a superior thriller from director Roger Spottiswoode (Tomorrow Never Dies). When a killer escapes into the mountains of Washington State to join a fishing party lead by guide Sarah (Kirstie Alley), FBI agent Stanton (Sidney Poitier) must enlist the help of mountain man Jonathan Knox (Tom Berenger). This is a 'fish-out-of-water' story, with city slicker Poitier struggling through the unfamiliar mountain terrain. But he gets his own back later in the film when the action moves to the city.

Spottiswoode keeps us guessing as to the identity of the killer, by throwing up some red herrings against all 5 members of the fishing party. Is the killer Andrew Robinson (Eastwood's opponent in the first Dirty Harry movie)? Or Richard Masur (who was in every second film of the 80s)?

Berenger is fine as the rough and surly Knox: as one character says "thank God for the wilderness - that's the only place someone like Jon Knox can feel at home!". But the film's highlight (apart from the spectacular scenery and wonderful score by John Scott) is Poitier. Has there ever been a more dignified actor to grace the screen? I can only think of Cary Grant as someone, like Poitier, who always seemed to manage to keep his dignity no matter situation the screenplay called for. Poitier was about 60 when the film was made, but you wouldn't guess it from the amount of hard physical work he has to do.

This one is a beauty!
