Down Periscope (1996)

I always feel like I need to apologise for liking this film so much. I know its completely predictable, I know some of the acting is dreadful, but I don't care.

I love silly movies that know they're silly eg Independence Day. I despise silly movies that try to pretend that they're not silly eg The Day After Tomorrow.

Down Periscope stars Kelsey Grammar (Dr Frasier Crane) as a submarine officer (Tom Dodge) who is overdue for his own command. He is given one last chance. The Navy in the person of Admiral Winslow (Rip Torn) wants to know if the defence systems could prevent a rogue diesel sub from an enemy country from launching an attack on the US. But Dodge's immediate superior, Admiral Graham (Bruce Dern) doesn't like Dodge and decides to take a hand by personally selecting a crew of the biggest losers and deadbeats in the Navy.

Grammar's enthusiasm carries much of the film. His broad grin and announcement "I love this job!" is infectious. I didn't recognise most of the cast with the exception of the usually obnoxious Rob Schneider as an over officious executive officer, Ken Hudson Campbell as the cook (he's Max from the Bruce Willis classic silly movie Armageddon), Harry Dean Stanton as the engineer and the always wonderful William H Macy as Dodge's war game opponent commander.

Lauren Holley plays the only female crew member, but the film is really stolen by standup comic Harland Williams as Sonar and Toby Huss as the radio operator (who does a great Sinatra impersonation).

I know it didn't get good reviews, but I love this one.

When Eight Bells Toll (1971)

Alistair MacLean is one of those curious authors, much like Stephen King, who is incredibly popular as a writer but whose films tend to be great disappointments for their loyal readers.

I remember as a kid reading all of MacLean's books and enjoying them immensely up until his novels of the 70s changed from action thrillers to a band of guys spending more time talking (and drinking) than actually doing anything.

When Eight Bells Toll is a typical MacLean novel and was turned into a typical MacLean film. What the films could never capture was MacLean's 'boys own adventure style of writing that was exciting and tense and humurous. When Eight Bells Toll, the book, starts with the hero Calvert (Anthony Hopkins) confronted by a man with a gun in a dark room. We get a brief history of the Colt 45, as a reflection of the nervous ramblings of a man who may be about to be shot.

The film starts in exactly the same way, but without the ramblings its a somewhat flat scene, with no real tension. And that basically sums up the rest of the film. Robert Morley as Uncle Arthur, Calverts boss, tries to lighten the mood, Jack Hawkins appears as the millionaire Skouras and Corin Redgrave (to me the least known of the Redgrave clan, but imdb.com shows he's been steadily employed for a long time) plays Calvert's assistant Hunslett.

Meteor (1979)

Between leaving James Bond in 1971 and the resurrection of his career in the mid-80s with The Name of the Rose and The Untouchables, Sean Connery made some real crap. Meteor is one such outing (although nowhere near as bad as Zardoz!) Connery plays Paul Bradley, a scientist who developed Project Hercules, a missile platform in space designed to destroy meteors that are going to hit the Earth. Of course, the bad guys (ie the military) have pointed the rockets the other way (ie China/Russia). Well, now a meteor is coming and Bradley has been asked by NASA head Harry Sherwood (Karl Malden) to come back and get Hercules working the way it should be. (Apparently NASA spent a fortune on this thing, but didn't bother getting a user manual!!!).

But wait, Hercules is not big enough for this rock! They must use Russia's equivalent platform. Bradley and Sherwood must fight the military in the person of General Adlon (Martin Landau) to get the help of Russian scientist Dr Dubov (Brian Keith!?) and his lovely translator/assistant Tatiana (Natalie Wood) so that the Earth may be saved.

Meteor is the kind of movie that could have been much better if only the writers Stanley Mann and Edmund North had thought through the logic of things a bt more. And the device of having Dubov speak only Russian may be realistic (not that realism belongs in this sort of film) but is really annoying.

And like all of these disaster movies, it has a cast that you instantly recognise and then almost as instantly realise that none of them had done anything worthwhile for a decade.

Johnny Dangerously (1984)

Michael Keaton's 3rd movie (after Night Shift and Mr Mom) was Johnny Dangerously. This one is a great send up of gangster movies. Johnny Kelly (Keaton) is forced to go to work for Jocko Dundee (Peter Boyle) in order to pay for his mother's (Maureen Stapleton) never ending list of medical conditions. Johnny's younger brother Tommy (Griffin Dunne) is a lwayer and the two find themselves on opposites sides. Highlight is rival gangster Roman Malonie (Richard Dmitri) and his mangling of the English language - I think you'll enjoy this one you fargin bastich iceholes!

Blood From the Mummy's Tomb

A young woman (Valerie Leon) finds herself possessed by the soul of an ancient Egyptian queen.

This is a later effort from Hammer studios. The surprise is that neither of Hammer's two biggest stars, Chrsitopher Lee and Peter Cushing turn up in this one, although Hammer regular Andrew Keir makes an appearance as the girl's father.

Welcome - Sort Of

Hi,

this is my first blog and I'm really just doing it for myself. I make no commitment to updating it or responding to emails or any stuff like that.

This blog is going to be a list of rapidshare and/or megaupload links to movies I've found on other sites. This site will contain NO files of its own and NONE of the uploaded files are my own work. If you find a link on my blog that you really want removed, then drop me an email and I'll see what I can do.

My movie links will cover a whole range of genres and ages. With the exception (mostly) of new release titles. If you want that stuff, then there are a milion other sites out there.

So, if you come across this site and find something useful, then you're welcome from me and the original posters who did all the work.

Enjoy
